In Memoriam: Dr. Robert Glidden, CHEA Founding Board Chair

Council for Higher Education Accreditation’s Founding Chair and Ohio University President Emeritus Dr. Robert Glidden, whose lifelong commitment to academic discovery and research and the advocacy of institutional accreditation forever impacted higher education, passed away on December 5, 2023.

"We owe CHEA's existence to Dr. Robert Glidden's unwavering dedication to institutional quality, autonomy, and academic freedom for all colleges and universities. Dr. Glidden and 24 other accreditation and institutional thought leaders were visionaries. It is our duty to uphold and safeguard these cherished values and commitments to higher education. CHEA remains steadfast in serving our member institutions, families, and students,” said CHEA President Cynthia Jackson Hammond. “Thank you, Dr. Glidden, for your indelible contributions. Your legacy will be honored and celebrated.”

President Glidden also chaired the Commission on Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness for the American Council on Education in Washington. Perhaps Glidden’s most enduring contribution to the future of higher education in the United States is his seminal work as the founding chair of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Read more, here.
