Happening This Week: ACICS Back on the Hot Seat (Politico "Weekly Education" [after opening link, scroll down page to see item], March 1, 2021) "The first meeting of the federal advisory panel on college accreditors of the Biden era kicks off this week. And it will start where the Obama administration left off: with the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, the controversial accreditor of for-profit colleges, in the crosshairs."

Tightening the 90-10 Rule (Inside Higher Ed, March 2, 2021) "A years-long push to lessen the incentive for for-profit institutions to recruit veterans as students took a major step toward becoming law with the House’s passage of a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package Saturday morning. Included in the package, which would also send another $40 billion in aid to the nation’s colleges and universities during the pandemic, was a provision tightening the controversial '90-10' rule.

University of Tennessee Partnering With Knoxville College, Tennessee College of Applied Technology for More Higher Education Accessibility (WBIR.com, February 25, 2021) “The University of Tennessee will also support the accreditation process of Knoxville College. ‘We will put words to action as we educate, empower, and elevate our shared students and the Black experience in Knoxville,’ said Leonard Adams, Knoxville College's Interim President.”

More States Turn to Public-College Mergers, But Easy Fixes May Remain Elusive (The Chronicle of Higher Education [subscription required], February 24, 2021) "Accreditation will provide another hurdle for the proposed new New Hampshire system to clear. It’s not apparent whether the new system would continue with all its campuses continuing to hold individual accreditations, but improving educational pathways and the student experience could lead to the pursuit of some kind of combined accreditation, the better to share educational resources. The University of Maine system is pursuing a unified accreditation from the New England Commission of Higher Education, its accreditor, known as NECHE, for similar reasons. Connecticut proposed combining its 12 community-college campuses under a unified accreditation to NECHE in 2019, and the accreditor asked for more information and later follow-up."
