Dear CHEA Member Institutions: Below is a listing of the institutional and programmatic accrediting organizations that are recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and are providing information about any changes that these accrediting organizations are making to their standards or practices during this difficult period of our dealing with Covid-19. As part of all of us adjusting to these circumstances, the accredited status of your institution or the various programs you house may need to be addressed. You may have an upcoming visit or report and are concerned about deadlines. Many institutions have moved to distance learning as the primary mode of instruction and may have questions about, e.g., curriculum, student engagement or grading practices. As you are aware, the federal government has recently provided for flexibility in the application of the standards and the processes of accrediting organizations (see Federal Update #89). This federal guidance is focused on the expansion of distance learning, the opportunity to conduct site visits virtually or postpone them and how accrediting organizations might modify their policies to accommodate the current environment. At the same time, each accrediting organization is an independent body and is applying this flexibility within the framework of its particular set of standards and practices. This means the individual accrediting organization is the most authoritative source of information for any questions or concerns about accredited status. We hope that this listing is a convenient means by which you can obtain any needed additional information about the accredited status of your institutions and programs.
